Course Overview

This course is designed for Healthcare Professionals across various settings whose roles involve moving and repositioning people or supporting individuals to move and reposition within their own homes.


The course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely, protecting their back health and ensuring patient safety. It addresses the application of this knowledge in a variety of environments.


Participants will learn about suitable equipment that can be used once a OT assessment has been carried out & will have the opportunity to learn about the variety of equipment.


This course has been developed in line with current occupational standards, qualification frameworks, and key resources, including:


  • Royal College of Nursing Moving and Handling Guidelines
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
  • (Manal Handling Operations Regulation) MHOR 1992

  • The Risk Assessment Process: TILEO/LITE and Patient Handling Plans
  • Health and Safety: Posture, Spinal Anatomy, Physiology, and Common Injuriesa
  • Identifying and Avoiding Unsafe or Controversial Techniques
  • Best Practices: Improved Techniques and Principles for Safe Handling

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide a brief description of anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and positioning people
  • Identify key legislation and agreed ways of working to consider when moving and positioning individuals
  • Explain how to minimise risks before engaging in moving and handling activities
  • Describe the steps to prepare individuals before any moving and repositioning tasks
  • Demonstrate a range of safe and effective techniques for moving and positioning people
